US South West Chapter - ISSNAF - Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation

Following the meeting organized under the leadership of the Italian General Consul, Dr. Fabrizio Nava, an executive committe of five founding members has been at work to organize the “US Southwest” chapter of the “Italian Scientists and Scholars of North America Foundation” (ISSNAF).

ISSNAF is a non-profit organization for the community of Italian Scientists and Scholars of North America with the vision of promoting scientific interaction and collaboration not only with fellow citizens active in North America, but also with academic and private research institutions operating in Italy. ISSNAF is seeking to attract Italian professionals who are active in the fields of biomedicine, literature, engineering, math and physics, information technology, social sciences, aerospace research, geology and energy. During its short history, ISSNAF has been involved in a number of deserving activities, the most important of which being the organization of the review process for the scientific applications received by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in 2010. Following two meetings in Rome in May 2011, for the first time in the history of our country and thanks to the skilled work of ISSNAF scientists, several million Euros have been granted to Italian scientists simply based on merit.

In association with the Fulbright program, ISSNAF is involved in the scientific growth of young Italians by making available financial support and a number of fellowships. In addition, a branch of ISSNAF, young ISSNAF, will be launched in September in Houston, with the plan of creating a scientific and mentoring mechanism provided by older ISSNAF members to under-40 members coming from Italy to work in North America.

Through the “US Southwest” chapter of ISSNAF we want to provide a platform of interaction and discussion for the Italian scientists operating in the states of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. We plan to have quarterly meetings in Houston, the city of the Southwest with the largest number of Italian scientists and scholars, in the Italian Cultural and Community Center (www.iccchouston.com). The initial activities will consists in seminars, conferences, and classes held by the local members. The executive council is now under formation thanks to the work of five founding members ; Daniel Minisini Ph.D. (Shell Oil Co.), Chiara Gabbi M.D. Ph.D. (University of Houston), Marco Marcelli M.D. (Baylor College of Medicine), Ing. Paolo Papi (IBM), and Giulio Taglialatela Ph.D. (University of Texas Medical Branch).

Any Italian scientist or scholar in the Southwest in invited to join ISSNAF. You will find the necessary information and a variety of services provided, including scholarships and professional opportunities, at our website www.issnaf.org.

Alla Cortese Attenzione dei Ricercatori Italiani afferenti al Consolato di Houston

Cari Connazionali,

In seguito alle riunioni dei ricercatori italiani indette nei mesi scorsi dal Console Generale a Houston, Dr. Fabrizio Nava, abbiamo avviato la costituzione del chapter “US Southwest” della “Italian Scientists and Scholars of North America Foundation” (ISSNAF).

ISSNAF è un’organizzazione non-profit che riunisce i ricercatori italiani del Nord America con finalità di promuovere interazioni e collaborazioni scientifiche non solo con connazionali attivi in USA/Canada ma anche con istituzioni accademiche e imprenditoriali presenti in Italia. ISSNAF raccoglie professionisti nei campi della biomedicina, delle materie letterarie, della matematica e fisica, dell’ingegneria, dell’informatica, delle scienze sociali, della ricerca spaziale, della geologia e dell’energia. Nel corso della sua breve esistenza ISSNAF ha generato numerose iniziative meritorie, la più importante delle quali è stata la revisione dei progetti di ricerca ricevuti dal Ministero della Salute nel 2010. Grazie all’inestimabile lavoro dei membri ISSNAF, per una delle prime volte nella storia del nostro Paese, un bando di concorso ha distribuito svariati milioni di euro su base esclusivamente meritocratica. ISSNAF inoltre dedica particolare attenzione ai giovani con l’istituzione di borse di studio e fellowships da spendere negli USA e con una forte partnership con il programma Fullbright. E’ anche in corso di istituzione “Young-ISSNAF” il network dei ricercatori “under-40” di ISSNAF che non solo offrira’ un substrato di scambio scientifico ma anche mettera’ a disposizione l’esperienza dei senior members di ISSNAF in un programma dedicato di mentorship. Il lancio di Young-ISSNAF avverra’ proprio a Houston il prossimo autunno.

Il chapter ISSNAF “US Southwest” vuole fornire una piattaforma di confronto e interazione scientifica per i ricercatori italiani che vivono negli stati del Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma e Arkansas. Le riunioni del chapter saranno organizzate a Houston, la città del Southwest con il maggior numero di ricercatori italiani, nella sede del Centro di Cultura Italiana (www.iccchouston.com). Le attività iniziali consisteranno in seminari, conferenze e corsi tenuti dai membri locali. Il consiglio direttivo è in formazione grazie al lavoro di cinque soci fondatori, Dr Daniel Minisini (Shell Oil Co.), Dr Chiara Gabbi (University of Houston), Prof. Marco Marcelli (Baylor College of Medicine), Ing. Paolo Papi (IBM), Prof. Giulio Taglialatela (University of Texas Medical Branch).
