Mosquitofish Behavioral Response to Animated Images

plosone logoResearchers investigated mosquitofish shoaling tendency using a dichotomous choice test in which computer-animated images of their conspecifics are altered in color, aspect ratio, and swimming level in the water column. Two italian researchers, Giovanni Polverino and Maurizio Porfiri, working at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University took part to the research.   For the article click here

Telescope Detects Light From the Earliest Stars

06OBSTAR SPAN-articleLargeAncient starlight, emitted by the first stars in the universe, has been detected using the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Marco Ajello, an italian astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues report the finding in the current issue of the journal Science. Dr. Ajello conducted the research while working at Stanford University.

Hydroperiod regime controls

PNAScoverHydroperiod regimes exert critical control in the creation of niches for different plant species in wetlands. However, the spatial signatures of the organization of plant species in wetlands and how the different drivers interact to yield such signatures are unknown. Focusing on Everglades National Park (ENP) in Florida, researchers showed that cluster sizes of each species follow a power law probability distribution and that such clusters have well-defined fractal characteristics.
An italian researcher, Romano Foti, is the study's first author.
