A Leap Forward for Red Blood Cell Formation

cover nature_dic_2012New research revealed how red blood cells are made and how the body regulates the amount of haemoglobin that is packaged in red blood cells at any time. An italian researcher, Luigi Ferrucci, working at the Clinical Research Branch, National Institute on Aging, in Baltimore, took part to the research published in the Nature journal.

Targeting Neurotransmitter Therapy

Journal of_physiology_coverSelective targeting of the neurotransmitter that differentially affects brain cells that control the two distinct functions of the pancreas may allow for new medication therapies for conditions such as diabetes, dyspepsia and gastro-esophageal reflux, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers. An italian researcher, R.Alberto Travagli, is the lead investigator.

Out of register beta-sheets

amyloidResearchers reported a previously unobserved type of amyloid fibril that tests as cytotoxic: one in which the strands of the contributing β-sheets are out of register. In all amyloid fibrils previously characterized at the molecular level, only in-register β-sheets have been observed. In out-of-register sheets, strands are sheared relative to one another, leaving dangling hydrogen bonds. An italian researcher, Anna Pensalfini, took part to the research.

Blood Test and Gene Sequencing to Detect Cancer

stm cover_nov28Scientists combined the ability to detect cancer DNA in the blood with genome sequencing technology in a test that could be used to screen for cancers. A report describing the new approach appears in the Nov. 28 issue of Science Translational Medicine. An italian researcher, Giovanni Parmigiani, working at the Dana faber Cancer Institute, took part to the research.

Impaired adult myelination in the prefrontal cortex

nature neuroscienceA new study led by an italian researcher, Patrizia Casaccia, working at Mount Sinai, determined that depriving mice of social contact reduced myelin production, demonstrating that the formation of new oligodendrocytes is affected by environmental changes.

Gene Variations Linked to Lung Cancer Susceptibility

naturegeneticsAn international group of scientists has identified three genetic regions that predispose Asian women who have never smoked to lung cancer. The specific genetic variations found in this study had not been associated with lung cancer risk in other populations. An italian researcher, Maria Teresa Landi, took part to the research.
