On the occasion of "2013 Year of Italian Culture in the USA", ISSNAF is supporting an event called "H2CU Highlights in New York" presented by the Honors Center of Italian Universities (H2CU) at the Italian Institute of Culture in New York, on the 17th of May 2013.

H2CU is presenting a series of events - meetings and conferences - that will show the results of the ten years of its activity in the US while outlining the strategy for future collaborations.

Consiglio Nazionale degli Ingegneri, in collaboration with ISSNAF, just announced a contest for the assignment of 9 scholarship opportunities reserved to the engineers enrolled in the Italian professional roster who were born after 1978. The announcement will be fully presented in Cernobbio on April 30th during the conference about the training opportunities of Italian engineers.

In the framework of "2013: Year of Italian Culture in the US", the 2013 ISSNAF Award for the Humanities will acknowledge the worthiest manuscript dealing with Italy /North America relationships in the fields of Social History, Intellectual History and Art.

The ISSNAF-Seattle Chapter Fall Meeting took place on December 6th at Harborview Medical Center in the Auditorium of the Research and Training building. 

The event entitled "At the interface of academic research and biomedical industry" jointly organized by ISSNAF Minnesota Chapter and R&D Systems was a real success. The event was held on Friday December 7th at the R&D Systems Headquarter.  

Thanks to the ISSNAF/INFN and ISSNAF/ASI internships, young investigators from Italian faculties are selected to spend an eight week research period with highly qualified tutors in the fiels of Engineering, Physics and Computer Science. The experience of these young people is personally and professionally highly rewarding. Here are the comments of two participants of the 2012 Summer Internships Program.

An Issnaf Scientific Jury has selected the research projects presented by Jole Fiorito who was awarded the 2012 ISSNAF Young Investigator Award, and Alessia Baccarini who was awarded the 2012 Paola Campese Award for Research on Leukemias. The winners received the Medaglia di Rappresentanza del Presidente della Repubbica from H.E. Ambassador Bisognero.

ISSNAF and Fondazione Marche are calling for applications for two post doc-fellowships to be carried out in the laboratories of Prof Mauro Ferrari in Houston (Nanotech) and Prof Camillo Ricordi in Miami (Metabolic Diseases).

Ancona, 9/25/12 - Minister Francesco Profumo, ISSNAF and Fondazione Marche Presidents together with the President of Regione Marche and the Chairman of Politecnico delle Marche officially presented the winners of the FM/ISSNAF Post-doc Fellowships in Molecular Biology. The program will invest almost 1M Eur in two year research in the USA of young investigators from Regione Marche under the guidance of prestigious tutors, represented at the press conference by Prof Piero Anversa.

“Innovitalia” is the new digital platform introduced at the Farnesina on October 4 2012 by Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi and the Minister of Education, Universities and Research, Francesco Profumo.

At the launch event participants included the Director of RAI Educational, Silvia Calandrelli; the President of Crowdengineering, Gioacchino La Vecchia; and, by video link, Mario Raviglione and Fabiola Gianotti from Geneva, Vito Campese, ISSNAF President from Los Angeles and Riccardo Lattanzi from New York.

Dr. Damiano Rondelli, ISSNAF Chicago Chapter Chair, who performed a stem cells transplantation in sickle cell anemia explains on issnaf.org the new procedure.

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder that causes a defect in the hemoglobin inside the blood red cells. This means that the red cells are less flexible and can easily acquire the shape of a sickle and obstruct small blood vessels.

On 31 May a networking event was held in Houston in collaboration between EURAXESS Links USA and ISSNAF (the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation) Houston Chapter, in cooperation with the EU Delegation, and under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy in Houston.

The ISSNAF-Seattle Chapter spring meeting took place on Thursday, May 17th in the Harborview Medical Center Auditorium under the auspices of the Italian Consulate in San Francisco. After Lorenzo Mannelli, Chair of ISSANF-Seattle Chapter recapitulated progress made since the inaugural meeting, the stage was left to the speakers selected for the Spring Meeting of our Chapter.

The ISSNAF Young Investigator Award and the Paola Campese Award for Research on Leukemias yearly awards a monetary prize to the most innovative research in selected fields. The deadline to submit an abstract has been extended to June 30.

The fellowships for young italian surgeons, promoted by AISNA (Association of Italian Surgeons of North America) with the support of ISSNAF have been awarded to Antonio Masi from Rome for the New York University School of Medicine, Benedetta Mungo from Padoa for the University of Chicago and Marco E. Allaix from Torino for the Emory University School of Medicine.

The Minnesota Chapter of ISSNAF and Young ISSNAF was officially launched on May 12, 2012 at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. ISSNAF President, Dr. Vito Campese, ISSNAF MN chapter chair Marco Pravetoni, and Italian Consular Correspondent in Minnesota, Marco Pavoloni, welcomed participants and stressed the importance of the new chapter both for ISSNAF and the local community. Doriana Ruffino (Young ISSNAF, University of Minnesota) introduced the speakers and the topics of presentation.

Minister Francesco Profumo appointed the seven members of the Comitato Nazionale dei Garanti per la Ricerca, charged with the evaluation of MIUR grant sponsored research projects. The appointees are ISSNAF Founding Member Alberto Sangiovanni Vincentelli, Anna Maria Colao, Daniela Cocchi, Francesco Sette, Vincenzo Barone, Angelos Chaniotis and Claudio Franchini.

During the 2nd National Health Research Conference, an ISSNAF Board member, Prof. Silvia Formenti, held a grants writing training session.

On November 5th, ISSNAF,with an inaugural event hosted by the Italian Cultural Center of Houston,
launched its network for young researchers,Young ISSNAF, the network –bound to be the future leadership of ISSNAF.

During the annual meeting, held in Los Angeles on the 17th of September, oral and poster presentations have been performed. All the presentations were a proof of the talent and the efforts of many young Italian scientists.

On the 3rd of November, 6 PM, at the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal, Maria Teresa Ferretti will hold a lecture on preclinical research in Alzheimer's disease:
"what we can learn form the transgenic animal models".

Amongst many talented candidates, a joint commission INAF/ISSNAF awarded Martina Gerbino and Lorenzo Posti and a joint commission INFN/ISSNAF awarded Marco Pagliazzi, Linda Finco and Ludovico Bianchi.

The winners are taking part in an eight week internship program since the end of July 2011.

The Fulbright Commission would like to invite members of the ISSNAF Community to contribute to the selection of future Fulbright grantees.

This invitation is open to scholars of all academic fields who wish to be considered experts for the selection process of the Fulbright Program.

During its September 17^th, 2011 meeting in Los Angeles, ISSNAF will award  the ISSNAF Young Investigator Award and the Paola Campese Award for Research on Leukemia.

George Bugliarello, one of ISSNAF founders, recently passed away.

He was President Emeritus and Institute Professor at Polytechnic Institute of New York University.

It is a great loss for the academic community and for all who loved him.

A memorial will take place on April 27th, 10.00am, at “Dibner Library, Pfizer Auditorium”, 5 Metrotech Center, Brooklin, NY 11201. The President of ISSNAF and its members express their heartfelt condolences to his family.
