|Meeting with Italy's Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin|
On Saturday, May 31th, 2014, a delegation of Italian researchers participated in a meeting with Italy's Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, and Sergio Pecorelli, Chancellor at the University of Brescia and President of the Italian Medicines Agency.
Italy's top two health care policymakers and regulators were in the U.S. on a mission to expand and strengthen several collaboration projects between primary health care institutions in Italy and the U.S.
In a universal care/single payer and mixed public-private system like Italy's, the Ministry of Health is responsible for governing and coordinating the National Health Care System - which is administered by Italy's 20 Regions - and regulating the private health care sector. The Italian Medicines Agency regulates drug production and distribution.
The meeting - organized by Professionisti Italiani NYC with the endorsement of ISSNAF and under the patronage of the Consulate General of Italy in New York - was also a chance to mingle with other NYC professionals, many of whom in the health care sector, as well as to exchange ideas on the merits of the U.S. and the Italian systems and learn what could be improved in both.
Ms. Beatrice Lorenzin is a Member of the Italian Parliament since 2008 and belongs to the New Center Right (NCD) party. She joined Forza Italia in 1996 and was elected in Rome's City Council in 1997 for two consecutive mandates. She was appointed Minister of Health with Letta's government in April 2013 and later confirmed with Renzi's government in 2014.
Mr. Sergio Pecorelli was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Italian Medicines Agency in 2009. He has a long and prestigious career as a surgeon and an academic, including a fellowship in pelvic surgery at the Mayo School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is Chair of the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Brescia, President of the University Research Council at the University of Brescia, Italy and Dean of the School of Obstetrics at the University of Brescia. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and of the Executive Board of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
