Medical Imaging Science Chapter @ SIRM 2014

sirmOn Saturday May the 25th, during the biannual meeting of the Societa' Italiana di Radiologia Medica (SIRM), the Medical Imaging Science Chapter of ISSNAF organized a round table to discuss the experiences of Italian radiologists abroad.

The round table was opened by Dr Alberto Di Mauro ISSNAF representative in Italy. Dr Di Mauro introduced ISSNAF to an interested audience composed of 60-70 Italian radiologists. He discussed the origins and mission of the foundation as well as the foundation accomplishments and collaborations with Italian based institutions such as MIUR and Ministry of Health.

The round table was moderated by Dr Lorenzo Mannelli.

Dr Domenico Zaca, physicist PhD illustrated his research and traveling who started in Italy during his PhD with collaborations between CNR (Centro Nazionale Ricerca) in Brindisi and Pisa. His experiments ranged between high filed brain functional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and diffusion weighted imaging of treated liver cancers. Dr Zaca first experience in United States consisted in one year at Johns Hopkins, this was followed by a three years experience at a Stamford CT based Siemens facility. Dr Zaca explained how he found the job advertisement of his current employer in Trento through the International Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ISMRM).

Dr Giulia Zamboni, MD described her experience in Boston at the Radiology Department of Harvard University, she reported on her accomplishments while in United States and tha described how she managed to reintegrate in the Italian radiology practice inVerona, where she continues to be a highly prolific clinical scientist. Dr Zamboni highlighted the need for a strong motivation to achieve significant results in the clinical and scientific community. She concluded describing how she continuing her collaboration with Harvard from Verona and how the working relationships with her American colleagues evolved in life long friendships.

Dr Luca Saba, MD is an extremely successful young Italian radiologist, he is under 40 but he has already more than 100 peer review publications, most as 1st author. Dr Saba, has been invited as lecturers in multiple countries, but he has never worked abroad. Dr Saba built all his success in Cagliari to demonstrate that leaving Italy is not a necessity to become an opinion leader in imaging. Dr Saba described the Italian and European funding opportunities for joint grant applications between Italian and foreign imaging researchers. He discussed his experience in grant writing and his learning experience in writing grant applications in collaborations with Italians leaving abroad.

Dr Lorenzo Mannelli, MD PhD described the challenges and opportunities for Italian radiologists willing to pursue a career or a short term experience abroad. He described his professional activity and collaborations between New York, Cambridge (UK), and Seattle. Dr Mannelli also mentioned his experience with the Italian Red Cross in Iraq, and the possibilities with WHO for professional experiences abroad. Dr Mannelli suggested a minimum of 12 months to maximize the outcome of experiences in different institutions.
