ISSNAF Lifetime Achievement Award

ISSNAF Board of Trustees instituted the ISSNAF Lifetime Achievement Award to acknowledge outstanding individuals of Italian origin who, thanks to their pioneering spirit and lifetime commitment, have honored their country of origin and given a significant contribution to research, leadership, or mentorship in one of the following fields: natural sciences, humanities, engineering.

Awardees are selected by the ISSNAF Board of Trustees based on the following criteria:

  • Recognized leadership or mentorship 
  • Membership of professional association(s) 
  • Original and innovative research with a long lasting impact – it can be either a singular accomplishment or long-term contribution 
  • Philanthropic commitment (if applicable)

2014 ISSNAF LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The ISSNAF Board of Trustees is honored to award Prof. Andrew Viterbi the 2014 ISSNAF Lifetime Achievement Award for his revolutionary and creative contribution to scientific development in the field of Information Technology. The Award was presented by ISSNAF President Vito Campese and H.E. Ambassador Claudio Bisogniero during the 2014 ISSNAF Annual Event in Washington DC on November 12

The Viterbi Algorithm is used in all the world's major cell phone standards, and Prof. Viterbi is also one of the creators of the spread spectrum standard used in cell phones (Code Division Multiple Access or CDMA).

 


A native of Italy, whose family immigrated to the U.S. to escape racial laws during World War II, Andrew Viterbi earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He was co-founder of Linkabit Corporation and Qualcomm Inc., and he currently serves as president of the Viterbi Group, LLC, founded in the year 2000. Andrew Viterbi’s pioneering work helped bring about the digital age and brought great prestige to his country of origin. For all of this we thank him and proudly bestow on him the ISSNAF Lifetime Achievement Award 2014.
