Voglio congratularmi con i membri fondatori della Fondazione ISSNAF e con tutti coloro che hanno contribuito alla sua creazione, nonché formulare i migliori auguri di successo per un’organizzazione che ritengo svolgerà un ruolo di grande importanza per la società italiana.
La presenza intellettuale italiana in Nord America è molto variegata: dall’insigne scienziato in una posizione di prestigio al giovane laureato che sta emergendo nel mondo accademico americano, dal manager responsabile di settori strategici di alta tecnologia all’ingegnere impegnato nella ricerca e sviluppo di nuovi prodotti in un’impresa americana. Per l’Italia, ciascuno di essi costituisce una straordinaria occasione.
Molte delle personalità accademiche e scientifiche italiane che lavorano e vivono in Nord America partecipano in un modo o nell’altro anche a progetti che si svolgono in Italia, ad esempio in veste di consulenti, e sono comunque disponibili ad accogliere accademici, giovani collaboratori e dottorandi italiani nei prestigiosi laboratori in cui operano.
Il fenomeno dell’emigrazione scientifica, pertanto, non va solo visto come causa d’emorragia di talenti, ma anche come un’opportunità di scambi a due vie, di collaborazioni e di sinergie.
Per sfruttare al meglio tale opportunità è necessario il coinvolgimento di coloro che sono attivi nel campo della ricerca e sviluppo in Nord America, rafforzando gli strumenti in grado di dare loro una maggiore visibilità in Italia.
La Fondazione si pone esattamente questi obiettivi, contribuendo in misura significativa alla promozione di un rientro in Italia di conoscenze favorendo altresì una preziosa osmosi fra le attività scientifiche, culturali e produttive italiane e competenze presenti in Nord America. Tutto ciò anche nell’ottica di agevolare i flussi d’informazione tra i due Paesi sulle opportunità di collaborazioni scientifiche, accademiche e post-accademiche offerte da Istituzioni americane ed italiane.
Non ho dubbi che l’esistenza della Fondazione permetterà da un lato una crescita di molti settori culturali, scientifici e tecnologici italiani e dall’altro un ulteriore rafforzamento dei rapporti tra Italia e USA.
La Fondazione nasce come iniziativa di autorevoli esponenti della comunità scientifica, tecnologica ed accademica italiana negli Stati Uniti ed ha ricevuto fin dal primo momento il totale appoggio dell’Ambasciata.
Il ruolo dell’Ambasciata sarà quello di contribuire al suo rafforzamento e all’acquisizione della necessaria visibilità, sia in Nord America, in una prima fase, sia in Italia in seguito, in linea con il doveroso sostegno istituzionale da rendere a questo patrimonio di cultura e attività.

I wish to commend the founding members of the ISSNAF Foundation and to all the contributors to its creation, as well as extend my best wishes for success to an organization that I believe will play a very important role in Italian society.
Italy’s intellectual presence in North America is diversified, ranging from the acclaimed scientist with a prestigious career to the new graduate entering the American academic world for the first time, and from the manager responsible for strategic high tech sectors to the engineer working on new product research and development. For Italy, each represents an extraordinary opportunity.
Many Italian academic and scientific professionals living and working in North America participate in one way or another in projects that develop in Italy, as consultants for example, and are in any case willing to welcome academicians, young collaborators and research graduates into the prestigious laboratories where they work.
The phenomenon of scientific emigration, thus, is not seen as only a hemorrhaging of talent but also as an opportunity for two-way exchanges, collaboration, and synergy.
To take better advantage of the opportunities it is necessary to involve those who are active in the research and development fields in North America, strengthening the instruments that can give them greater visibility in Italy.
The Foundation has precisely these objectives, contributing significantly to the promotion of a return to Italy of “knowledge” (not only in the “physical” sense) as well as to encouraging a precious osmosis between the scientific, cultural and productive activities and competencies present in North America. All this also in the perspective of facilitating the flows of information between the two countries with respect to the scientific, academic and post-academic opportunities for collaboration offered by American and Italian institutions.
I have no doubts that the Foundation will allow, on the one hand, a growth of many Italian cultural, scientific and technological sectors, and on the other, a further strengthening of the relations between Italy and the USA.
The Foundation is born as an initiative of authoritative exponents of the Italian scientific, technological and academic communities in the United States and has received the Embassy’s full support from the outset.
The role of the Embassy will be to contribute to its consolidation and acquisition of the necessary prominence, in North America first and then in Italy, in keeping with the institutional support due to this storehouse of culture and activity.
