Extreme melting on Greenland ice sheet |
|
The Greenland ice sheet can experience extreme melting even when temperatures don't hit record highs, according to a new analysis by, an italian researcher, Dr. Marco Tedesco, assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at The City College of New York. His findings suggest that glaciers could undergo a self-amplifying cycle of melting and warming that would be difficult to halt.

Le ricerche sulle piante di una giovane biologa che ritorna in Italia grazie alla Fondazione Armenise-Harvard
Firenze-Boston, 18 maggio 2011. Dalla comparsa dell’uomo la sfida è sempre stata quella di conquistare nuove terre, rendendole abitabili, coltivabili e fonte di sostentamento. In questi ultimi decenni l’aumento della popolazione mondiale e l’eccessivo sfruttamento hanno ridotto sempre più i terreni coltivabili aumentando di pari passo il bisogno di nutrimento e di energia. La sfida dunque è cambiata: adesso è urgente ottimizzare le aree destinate alle coltivazioni e nello stesso tempo creare nuove fonti di energia. Adattare le piante per incrementare la loro produttività nei terreni poco fertili, dovendo fare fronte anche ai cambiamenti climatici globali, è una componente essenziale di questa nuova sfida.
