The following Report describes the cooperation Agreement between ISSNAF and the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea of Italy – General Directorate for Sustainable Development, Energy and Climate. The Report summarizes the services and the consultancy tasks provided by ISSNAF to the Ministry, as well as the initiatives undertaken by ISSNAF in compliance with the terms of the agreement which was signed on July 2009.

Goals:

Promote exchanges among Italian and American research institutions.
Professional know how between companies established in the US and Italy.
Encourage joint projects among research institutions and relevant government agencies.
Establish collaborations with private sector organizations in the field of low carbon technologies, atmospheric physics and climate change.
Increase visibility of Italian activities in the field of clean technologies.

Initiatives:

1. ISSNAF established fellowships in research topics of particular interest for Italy, respectively in the Field of Technology for Energy Efficiency and in the Field of Climate Change Modeling. Both fellowships are structured to allow to the holders to spend part of their time in Italy and part in the USA. The two fellowships were awarded to:

* Dr. Mostafizur Mozumdar for a project focused on “Development of a framework for monitoring and controlling energy consumption of smart buildings” in the context of collaboration between the University of California in Berkeley and the Politecnico of Torino

* Dr. Stefano Materia for a project on “The effects of freshwater discharge into Eastern Equatorial Atlantic on Western and Central Africa climate variability”. in the context of a collaborative research project between the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder (Colorado) and the Center Euro-Mediterranean for the Climate in Lecce

2. ISSNAF has planned a number of workshops and seminars for the year 2010, which will take place in cooperation with Italian and American research Centers and Organizations on themes such as carbon capture and sequestration, smart grids, shale gas e bioenergy. ISSNAF will cooperate in particular with the UN Foundation and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard within the US, and with ENEL, ENI, the groups Mossi&Ghisolfi, Ansaldo, the Area Park in Trieste and the Environment Scientific Technological Park in Torino, within Italy.

3. ISSNAF is organizing an international Symposium for the 2010 on The Science of Climate Change with the participation of some of the most important scientists working in the field.

Accordo ISSNAF – Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare

Il Ministero dell’Ambiente e della tutela del territorio e del mare – Direzione Generale per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile, l'Energia e il Clima , nel luglio del 2009 ha concluso un accordo con la Fondazione ISSNAF, finanziando alcune iniziative rese possibili grazie alle risorse di contatti e di competenze di ISSNAF.

Scopo:

Rafforzare i contatti a livello scientifico tra Istituti e Laboratori americani e ricercatori Italiani nel campo della Fisica dell’Atmosfera e dei Cambiamenti Climatici in generale.
Stabilire contatti con aziende americane impegnate in ricerca e sviluppo nel campo delle “low carbon technologies”, con particolare riferimento alle energie rinnovabili e ai biocombustibili, al fine di favorire progetti comuni con aziende italiane del settore.
Ricercare accordi che portino ad un’intensificazione di scambi di ricercatori, e conseguentemente di know-how ed expertise, tra Italia ed USA.
Aumentare la visibilità negli USA dell’attività Italiana nel campo delle tecnologie "pulite" per attirare investimenti Americani in Italia.

Initiative:

Per raggiungere gli scopi prefissati, ISSNAF ha avviato le seguenti inziative:

1. ISSNAF ha bandito due borse di studio su argomenti reputati di particolare interesse per l’Italia, rispettivamente nel campo delle tecnologie per l’efficienza energetica, e nel campo dello sviluppo di modelli numerici dei cambiamenti climatici. Entrambe le borse sono strutturate in modo da consentire ai vincitori di utilizzarne parte in Italia e parte negli USA. Le borse sono state assegnate a:

Dr. Mostafizur Mozumdar che ha sottoposto un progetto dal titolo “Development of a framework for monitoring and controlling energy consumption of smart buildings” La borsa si inquadra in un progetto di collaborazione gia’ in corso tra il Politecnico di Torino e l’Università della California, in Berkeley. Il Dr. Mozumdar ha iniziato la sua attività a partire dal primo Gennaio 2010.

Dr. Stefano Materia che ha sottoposto un progetto dal titolo “The effects of freshwater discharge into Eastern Equatorial Atlantic on Western and Central Africa climate variability”. La borsa si inquadra in un progetto di collaborazione tra il National Center for Atmosferic Research (NCAR) di Boulder (Colorado) e il Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per il Clima di Lecce. Il Dr. Materia ha iniziato la sua attività a partire dal primo Febbraio 2010.

2. ISSNAF si è attivata per rafforzare i rapporti tra le istituzioni indicate e ha stabilito contatti, sia in USA che in Italia, per l’organizzazione di una serie di incontri programmati per il 2010 su argomenti di particolare interesse per l’Italia e gia’ puntualmente individuati come di seguito indicato: carbon capture and sequestration, smart grids, shale gas e bioenergy. In USA gli interlocutori con i quali stiamo cooperarando per coinvolgere aziende e centri di ricerca attivi nei suddetti campi sono la UN Foundation e la Kennedy School of Government dell’Università di Harvard. In Italia, invece, abbiamo stabilito contatti con ENEL, ENI, il gruppo Mossi&Ghisolfi, l’Ansaldo, l’Area Park di Trieste e il Parco Scientifico Tecnologico per l’Ambiente di Torino.

3. ISSNAF è impegnata nell’organizzazione di una conferenza internazionale finalizzata alla verifica dello stato delle conoscenza scientifica attuale sui cambiamenti climatici. ISSNAF si è assunta il compito di coinvolgere in tale conferenza alcuni dei principali scienziati americani attivi in questo campo.
