2017 ISSNAF Annual Event Page

"Science & the New Industrial Revolution: Industry 4.0"

was the focus of 2017 edition of the ISSNAF annual event, which took place on the 7th and 8th of November at the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C.

Exponents from the world of science, business, and federal agencies of the United States exchanged views on the impact that artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, applied to productive processes, are having on science, on the academic world, and on our daily lives.

Rita Colwell2017-11-08 01.24.43The biologist Rita Rossi Colwell, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, previously Director of the National Science Foundation from 1998 to 2004 and among the founding members of ISSNAF, received the ISSNAF Life Achievement Award on November 7.

Five young Italian researchers working in the U.S. and in Canada were the recipients of the 2017 ISSNAF Awards, on November 8. Each year, ISSNAF acknowledges young Italian researchers by presenting the ISSNAF Awards for Young Investigators in five subjects and awarding the winner in each category with a $3,000 prize.

"ISSNAF affiliates spearhead research, pioneer science and constantly push forward the boundaries of our knowledge" said the Italian Ambassador to the United States, Armando Varricchio. "They are an asset both for Italy and North America, and a true bridge between the two sides of the Atlantic. The young winners of the ISSNAF awards are a crucial asset in the context of relations between the USA and Italy. Their hard work and energy are a reason for Italy to be proud, and provide a strong impetus of innovation and progress to our companies".

Vito Campese2017-11-07 16.58.44"ISSNAF has been working together with Italian and American businesses for a long time" said the president of the foundation Vito M. Campese. "We are aware that with our network of talented scientists, and being involved in networks for international co-operation, we can act as a bridge between the worlds of academia and business, between research centers and laboratories and the evolution of companies. Industry 4.0 represents a challenge that we must accept, to renew this link, which is important for both basic and applied research. The importance and current relevance of this theme are in line with the quality of the speakers and the prestigious location, the Italian Embassy in Washington. I would like to thank them for their hospitality once again this year" he added.

"Another revolution is underway and its foundation is based on artificial intelligence (AI)" said Dr. Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow, Vice President, Europe and Director, IBM Research - Zurich. "AI will be more impactful than the steam engine and its benefits will raise the global standard of living if we harness it appropriately. This is particularly important for our future scientists and engineers".
