Founded in 2026, the ISSNAF Illinois Chapter brings together Italian scholars and professionals across the state’s universities, research centers, and innovation hubs. The Chapter promotes collaboration, mentorship, and knowledge exchange, strengthening the visibility and impact of Italian-led research in Illinois.

GIULIA GALLI
Giulia Galli is the Liew Family Professor of Electronic Structure and Simulations in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago, and a Senior Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where she is the director of the Midwest Integrated Center for Computational Materials. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Science, and the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Physical Society. She is the recipients of numerous awards in computational physics, theoretical chemistry, materials science and nanoscience, including the David Adler Lectureship Award and the Rahman Prize from the APS and the Materials Theory Award from the MRS.

DANIELA TUNINETTI
Daniela Tuninetti is Professor and Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago. An IEEE Fellow, her research focuses on information theory, wireless networks, caching, and quantum-related technologies. She is excited to serve as Treasurer of the Illinois chapter of ISSNAF and support its growth and impact.

MARINA GARASSINO
Marina Garassino is Professor of Medicine and Director of Thoracic Oncology at the University of Chicago. Formerly Chief of Thoracic Oncology at Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan. Research focus: precision medicine, immuno-oncology, and biomarkers in NSCLC, SCLC, mesothelioma, and thymic malignancies. Author of 260+ peer-reviewed publications in NEJM, Lancet Oncology, JCO, and Annals of Oncology. MD with specialization cum laude, University of Milan (1995); ESMO Clinical Fellowship, Christie's Hospital, Manchester (2009). ESMO Council member, EMA SAG member, and founder of Women for Oncology Italy.

MASSIMILIANO DELFERRO
Dr. Massimiliano Delferro is a senior chemist and group leader of the Catalysis Science Program in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He obtained his PhD from the University of Parma, Italy. In 2016, he joined Argonne where he currently works on the chemical recycling of plastics and the development of catalysts for shale gas valorization. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

LAURA GAGLIARDI
Laura Gagliardi is the Richard and Kathy Leventhal Professor at the University of Chicago. Born in Italy, she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Bologna. Her research develops advanced quantum chemistry methods and integrates AI with multiscale modeling to design catalysts and materials for energy and climate applications.

Secretary
BARBARA LAVINA
Barbara Lavina is a beamline scientist for the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. Born in Italy, Barbara earned her PhD at the University of Padova. She exploits synchrotron x-rays to probe matter at ambient and extreme conditions to investigate deep Earth, Planetary, physics, chemistry and material sciences problems.

Young ISSNAF Liason
MARCIANO SINISCALCHI
Marciano Siniscalchi is a Professor of Economics at Northwestern University. His research focuses on the foundational aspects of decision theory and dynamic games. He is an elected Fellow of both the Econometric Society and the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (SAET). Currently, he serves as a co-editor of Econometrica, having previously served as a co-editor for the Journal of Economic Theory. He is also an Amazon Scholar and holds a Ph.D. in Economic Analysis and Policy from Stanford University.

PIETRO VERONESI
Pietro Veronesi is the Sherman and Vivian Chao Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a research fellow of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Additionally, he is a former director of the American Finance Association and co-editor of the Review of Financial Studies.
