From Medicine to Intelligence: Building Bridges in the Age of AI
Luca Pani, is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Miami, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and new President of ISSNAF.
Drawing on more than forty years of experience in medicine, pharmacology, and regulatory science, Pani reflects on the profound transformation of healthcare driven by artificial intelligence. He discusses how AI is moving medicine beyond the traditional description of symptoms and diseases toward a new era of pattern recognition, predictive models, and AI-assisted drug discovery.
A central theme of the conversation is the need to balance technological innovation with responsibility. While AI promises faster clinical trials and more precise treatments, Pani warns of challenges related to transparency, trust, accountability, and equitable representation in medical research. He also argues that future breakthroughs may come not only from treating disease mechanisms, but from understanding and amplifying the biological factors that protect human health.
Beyond his scientific work, Pani shares his vision for ISSNAF as a bridge connecting Italy and North America through mentoring, mobility programs, and scientific collaboration. Reflecting on a career that spans continents, academia, industry, and regulatory agencies, he offers a clear message to the next generation: seek exceptional mentors, cultivate a love of learning, and never stop pursuing wisdom.
