To Prof. Roberto Peccei: a brilliant scientist, a natural leader, a thoughtful colleague
Roberto Peccei (1942-2020) was a visionary scientist, dedicated leader, and cherished colleague. Born in Torino, Italy, he followed his father’s legacy and made significant contributions to theoretical physics, most notably through the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, which has influenced our understanding of dark matter. Prof. Peccei's distinguished career took him from MIT to Stanford, the Max Planck Institute, and DESY before joining UCLA in 1989. At UCLA, he served as Chair of the Physics Department, Dean of Physical Sciences, and Vice Chancellor for Research. A passionate educator, Prof. Peccei was committed to inspiring future generations of scientists. His memory will continue to inspire students and colleagues alike.
