What were your expectations for the Mentoring Program?
When I applied to the ISSNAF Mentoring Program as a sophomore at Caltech, I was at an important turning point in my academic journey. I knew I wanted to commit my career to cancer research, but I felt overwhelmed by the many paths available—whether to pursue an MD and work closely with patients, a PhD for deeper scientific exploration, or an MD‑PhD to bridge both worlds. I hoped the program would help me gain clarity, understand what each path truly involved, and guide me toward a direction aligned with my passion for microbiology and oncology. More than anything, I was looking for someone experienced who could help me make sense of the questions that kept me awake at night.
How did this experience impact you?
My experience with my mentor, Dr. Vincenzo Coppola, deeply shaped my confidence and academic direction. From the beginning, he took the time to understand my interests and motivations in microbiology and oncology. Rather than telling me which degree to choose, he explained the practical realities of each path—the daily life of MD and PhD students, the structure of an MD‑PhD program, and how each option could fit my goals.
Drawing from his own career, he offered honest insights into the challenges and rewards of cancer research, and gave concrete advice on building diverse research experiences, choosing strong mentors, and preparing graduate applications. He also encouraged me to make decisions true to my values and to explore opportunities without pressure.
Dr. Coppola broadened my perspective by introducing me to new areas of oncology and showing how my interests intersected in meaningful ways. His understanding of both the Italian and U.S. academic systems gave me a wider view of international scientific careers. The framework he helped me develop continues to guide my choices in research, coursework, and long‑term planning.
Why would you recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program?
I strongly recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program because it provides a level of mentorship that is both deeply personal and intellectually meaningful. The program connects students with professionals who truly understand the complexity of navigating the American academic system while maintaining ties to Italian academic culture. What makes the program exceptional is that the guidance is not generic; mentors invest in each student and offer thoughtful, individualized advice grounded in real expertise.
The one‑on‑one nature of the mentorship creates space for conversations that can genuinely shape a student’s academic and professional trajectory. For anyone seeking clarity, inspiration, or simply a trusted and experienced voice while navigating difficult decisions, the ISSNAF Mentoring Program is an invaluable resource. The impact of these mentoring relationships extends well beyond the immediate moment and can influence a student’s development as a scientist for years to come—ultimately benefiting the broader scientific community as well.
