Mentoring Program for Early Career Members

2018

What were your expectations for the Mentoring Program?

As a young Italian researcher in the San Francisco Bay Area, I joined the Young ISSNAF Mentoring Program hoping to gain insight into building a successful research career abroad. I was looking for guidance, inspiration, and exposure to the experiences of accomplished Italian scientists in North America. I expected the program to provide not only practical advice but also a broader perspective on the career paths available to researchers like myself.

How did this experience impact you?

The Mentorship Program—alongside initiatives like the Bay Area Chapter’s BAC Talk series—was truly eye-opening. It helped me better understand the landscape of opportunities ahead and gave me the motivation to push forward during the more challenging phases of my early career. Hearing directly from successful Italian researchers allowed me to see what’s possible and gave me the confidence to pursue similar paths. My mentor, Prof. Emanuela Barzi of Fermilab, shared insights that deeply resonated with me—particularly her view that starting as an underdog can become a strength, driving you to work harder and succeed.

Why would you recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program?

I highly recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program to all Italian scientists seeking career guidance, motivation, and meaningful connections. The opportunity to learn from those who have already paved the way is invaluable. ISSNAF provides not only practical support but also a strong sense of community and inspiration that can make a real difference in shaping one’s professional journey.
