What were your expectations for the Mentoring Program?
Through the Young ISSNAF Mentoring Program, I hoped to connect with a mentor who could support my goal of pursuing an academic career in North America. I expected regular, constructive meetings, honest feedback, and guidance on identifying professional development opportunities.
Having completed my education in Italy—aside from 15 months as a Visiting Scholar in the U.S.—I was seeking insight into the North American academic system. I believed the program could help me navigate this path with the support of an experienced mentor who had already succeeded in that environment.
How did this experience impact you?
The Young ISSNAF Mentoring Program was a truly eye-opening and constructive experience. As a young Italian scholar with limited training in the U.S., entering the North American academic job market felt daunting. Thanks to my mentor, Prof. Marco Rolandi from UC Santa Cruz, I gained valuable perspective on the academic environment in the U.S. through the lens of a successful Italian scholar.
Our regular meetings covered many aspects of building an academic career, and his insights—particularly from his experience as a department chair—greatly strengthened my position as a faculty candidate. His mentorship extended beyond the program’s official timeline and continued until I secured an Assistant Professor position.
Why would you recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program?
I strongly encourage young Italian scholars aspiring to an academic career in North America to take full advantage of the ISSNAF Mentoring Program. The opportunity to receive tailored guidance from experienced mentors who have already navigated this path is truly invaluable.
