Mentoring Program for Students

What were your expectations for the Mentoring Program?
I joined the Young ISSNAF Mentoring Program hoping to gain a clearer perspective on an important decision I was facing at the end of my studies: whether to pursue a PhD or start working in industry. I was particularly interested in discussing this choice with someone who had first-hand experience of both the European and US professional environments, and in understanding how these two paths compare in terms of career opportunities and long-term development.
How did this experience impact you?
My conversations with my mentor, Roberto Carlino, gave me the opportunity to openly discuss the advantages and challenges of pursuing a PhD against entering the industry, as well as the differences between the US and Europe. His experience and perspective helped me look beyond the immediate decision and consider how each path could influence my professional development in the long term. These discussions gave me a clearer framework for evaluating my options and increased my confidence in making a career decision aligned with my goals.
Why would you recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program?
I would recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program to any student facing an important academic or career decision and looking for honest, first-hand advice. Having the opportunity to speak directly with an established Italian professional abroad provides a perspective that is difficult to gain from university, or by researching career paths independently. For me, the value of the program was not simply in receiving an answer, but in having someone with experience help me think more critically about my options and goals.
