Mentoring Program for Students

2025

What were your expectations for the Mentoring Program?

From the ISSNAF Mentoring Program, I hoped to receive structured guidance on navigating the early stages of an academic career in neuroscience, particularly regarding research opportunities in North America. As a medical student interested in translational neuroscience and the physician-scientist pathway, I sought clarity on how to integrate clinical training with research and what concrete steps to take to prepare for competitive international programs.

How did this experience impact you?

Working with my mentor, Dr. Alessandro La Chioma, came at a crucial moment when I was making important decisions about fellowships and research trajectories. His experience transitioning from a PhD at the Max Planck Institute in Munich to postdoctoral positions across three continents, including his current role at NYU's Center for Neural Science, gave me invaluable insight into what building a truly international research career entails. His honest advice helped me understand not just the scientific excellence required, but also the practical realities of mobility, adapting to different research environments, and making strategic choices at each career stage. This mentorship shaped how I'm now approaching my next steps in academic preparation, with greater clarity on how to balance scientific goals with the practical realities of living and working across different countries and research cultures.

Why would you recommend the ISSNAF Mentoring Program?

Because it connects you with accomplished Italian scientists who understand both the Italian academic system and the realities of research careers in North America. Their honest, personalized advice helps you make informed decisions about your future and understand what excellence truly looks like at the international level. The program also opens doors to a valuable professional network that can support your growth beyond the mentorship itself.
