The Evaluation Committee for the Call for Young Researchers 2010 completed its works on May 4, 2012. The program provides a fund of Eur30.6M for research projects in the clinical care and biomedical fields presented by under 40 investigators. The projects are evaluated according to the method of peer review. ISSNAF supported the Ministry during the review process.The Minister of Health, Professor Renato Balduzzi, met with the Committee on May 3rd. |

On April 23, 2012 the first public lecture organized by the ISSNAF South West Chapter took place. The event was made possible thanks to a partnership with the Italian Cultural and Community Center (ICCC)—the lecture took place in the beautiful Milford House, the head quarter of the ICCC in the heart of Houston—but also with the support of another prestigious and vital institution of the city, the University of Houston, more specifically the UH Italian Studies and Jewish Studies Programs. The distinguished speaker of the talk entitled “Dante in Auschwitz: Primo Levi Reads the Canto of Ulysses” was Alessandro Carrera. |

Researchers found that bariatric surgery dramatically outperforms standard medical treatment of severe type 2 diabetes. These findings were published March 27 in an advanced online edition of the New England Journal Medicine (NEJM). An italian researcher, Francesco Rubino, working at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, is the senior author.

Researchers confirm that COX-2 is expressed in cells lining blood vessels and that selectively removing it predisposes mice to blood clotting and high blood pressure. The paper was published in Science Translational Medicine. An italian researcher, Emanuela Ricciotti, working at the University of Pennsylvania, took part to the research.
