ISSNAF AWARDS 2012: Call for Applications

awards ISSNAF encourages all Italian researchers born after April 1972 and currently primarily working in the United States or Canada to submit an abstract of their research. The ISSNAF Young Investigator Award and the Paola Campese Award for Research on Leukemias yearly awards a monetary prize to the most innovative research in selected fields. Deadline: June 15

Candidates must be born in Regione Marche or be residents of Regione Marche before April 2012; must hold a relevant “Diploma di Specializzazione” or a relevant “Dottorato di Ricerca” completed no sooner than March 2005 and must be fluent in written and spoken English. Deadline to apply: May 31th, 2012.

The italian Minister Francesco Profumo nominated an ISSNAF founding member, Alberto Sangiovanni Vincentelli, as a member of an advisory board in charge of monitoring the research funds allocation process.

miR-3151 interplays with its host gene BAALC

A study has identified microRNA-3151 as a new independent prognostic marker in certain patients with acute leukemia. An italian researcher, Guido Marcucci, working at the Ohio State University Medical Centre, took part to the research.

Networking event

The networking event "European opportunities for research mobility and transatlantic research cooperation" will take place in Houston on Thursday, May 31st, from 6:00 to 8:30pm at the Italian Cultural and Community Center. The event is co-organized by ISSNAF Houston and EURAXESS Links USA.

Contributions to saliva testosterone levels

Researchers working at the University of Montreal were able to establish that testosterone levels in infancy are not inherited genetically but rather determined by environmental factors. An italian researcher, Doretta Caramaschi, is the study's first author.

MoH Grants Evaluation Committee

The Evaluation Committee for the Call for Young Researchers 2010 completed its works on May 4, 2012. The program provides a fund of Eur30.6M for research projects in the clinical care and biomedical fields presented by under 40 investigators. The projects are evaluated according to the method of peer review. ISSNAF supported the Ministry during the review process.The Minister of Health, Professor Renato Balduzzi, met with the Committee on May 3rd.

Treatment of type 2 diabetes

Researchers found that bariatric surgery dramatically outperforms standard medical treatment of severe type 2 diabetes. These findings were published March 27 in an advanced online edition of the New England Journal Medicine (NEJM). An italian researcher, Francesco Rubino, working at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, is the senior author.

Vascular COX-2 Modulates Blood Pressure

Researchers confirm that COX-2 is expressed in cells lining blood vessels and that selectively removing it predisposes mice to blood clotting and high blood pressure. The paper was published in Science Translational Medicine. An italian researcher, Emanuela Ricciotti, working at the University of Pennsylvania, took part to the research.

Trust and authenticity in the digital environment

The Spring Event organized by ARPICO will take place on Thursday, May 17, 2012 6:15 PM - 8:45 PM at the Italian Cultural Institute in Vancouver. During the event, entitled "Trust and Authenticity in the Digital Environment: an increasingly cloudy issue", Prof. Luciana Duranti, Chair and Professor School of Library, Archival and Information Studies University of British Columbia will hold a lecture.

The Career Development Award provides three to five years of support for newly independent scientists at an agreed host institute in Italy. It is intended to foster the development of outstanding scientists and enable them to expand their potential to make significant contributions to their field of research.

The 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI National Radio Science Meeting will be held jointly on July 8-14, 2012, in Chicago, IL, USA. The event is joinlty sponsored by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) and by the U.S. National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (USNC-URSI).
