Opportunities for US Researchers with the Horizon Europe work programme 2023-24

On December 6th, 2022, the European Commission (EC) adopted the main Horizon Europe work programme 2023-24, with around €13.5 billion to support researchers and innovators to pursue breakthrough solutions for environmental, energy, digital and geopolitical challenges.

Horizon Europe is encouraging international participation, notably with the US. The vast majority of the Calls for Proposals under this work programme are open to US participants.

Thanks to the ‘Associated Partner Status’, US participants not receiving European Commission funds are no longer required to sign a Grant Agreement with the EC which makes their participation smoother.

Global challenges require global solutions

As part of the broader EU €95.5 billion research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, this funding will contribute to the EU reaching its climate goals, increasing energy resilience, and developing core digital technologies.

The Horizon Europe work programme 2023-2024 covers actions to support and strengthen international initiatives in renewable energies, food systems, global health, environmental observations and more.

How can you participate?

The first calls for proposals opened on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal on 7 December 2022. Horizon Europe Information Days targeting potential applicants are taking place between 6 December 2022 and 16 February 2023. US participants are strongly encouraged to attend these info days.

US participants can easily find partners to submit proposals by sharing their interest or consulting the ‘Partner Search Announcements’ option available for each of the Call for Proposals: To do so, select in one of the thematic cluster work programmes below the code for the desired call for proposal/topic (i.e. HORIZON-HLTH-2023-CARE-04-01), search with this code the EU Funding and Tenders Portal. Scroll down on the page of the desired Call for Proposal and click on ‘Partner Search Announcements’. Look through the list for possible partners, or enter your own announcement for other partners to see.

We also encourage you to reach out directly to your known European peers and ask them if they are planning to submit a proposal.
