Gianni Cicali (Florence, Italy) is a scholar specializing in the history of Italian theater. He holds doctoral degrees from the Università di Firenze and the University of Toronto, and he is Professor in the Department of Italian Studies at Georgetown University.
His research focuses on Italian theater and cultural history from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, with particular attention to Renaissance and Baroque religious theater, as well as cinema, the migration of Italian theater professionals to the Americas, and the U.S. Federal Theatre Project (1935–39).
Prof. Cicali is the author of Teatro ed eresia nel Settecento italiano (2021), Attori e ruoli nell’opera buffa italiana del Settecento (2005), and L’Inventio crucis nel teatro rinascimentale fiorentino (2012). He co-edited Migrazioni teatrali e artistiche tra Europa e Americhe (2024) with E. Mazzoleni and A.M. Testaverde. With Elena Mazzoleni, he also edited the special issue Dramaturgies et littératures en voyage of Cahiers de littérature française (2020), and he edited the special issue Teatro italiano fra testo, performance e scena of Quaderni d’Italianistica (2015). His scholarly work includes numerous articles on Italian Renaissance and Baroque theater, literature, and the arts, as well as eighteenth-century theater.
From 2011 to 2015, Cicali served as Editor-in-Chief of Quaderni d’Italianistica, the journal of the Canadian Association for Italian Studies. He is a member of the advisory boards of Letteratura teatrale italiana, Quaderni d’Italianistica, Elephant & Castle, and Gentes, and he serves on the editorial board of Renaissance and Reformation (through 2026). He is also a member of the advisory board of AMAtI (Archivio Multimediale dell’Attore Italiano, University of Florence).
