Prof. Andrea Alù appointed ISSNAF Scientific Council Chair!

Prof. Andrea Alù

Warmest congratulations to Professor Andrea Alù on his appointment as Chair of the ISSNAF Scientific Council.

Professor Alù's journey with ISSNAF began in 2013 when he received the Franco Strazzabosco YI Award for Research in Engineering, recognizing his innovative contributions to engineering research. Since then, he has continued to make significant strides in the field of metamaterials and applied electromagnetics.

An active member of the ISSNAF Scientific Council, Professor Alù co-chaired last year’s edition of the same ISSNAF YI Franco Strazzabosco Award he once received. He is also engaged with the ISSNAF New York Chapter, strengthening connections with other Italian local organizations.

He serves as a Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York (CUNY), Einstein Professor of Physics at the CUNY Graduate Center, Founding Director of the Photonics Initiative at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, and Professor of Electrical Engineering at the City College of New York.

His research has led to groundbreaking discoveries, including the first experimental demonstration of a three-dimensional electromagnetic cloak, nonreciprocal phenomena in magnet-free metamaterials, electromagnetic time-reflections, and extreme nonlinearities in quantum-engineered metasurfaces. His work has earned him numerous accolades, such as the Max Born Award (2024), the SPIE Mozi Award (2024), and the IEEE AP-S Distinguished Achievement Award (2023).

Beyond his research, Professor Alù actively contributes to the scientific community. He is the President of the Metamorphose Virtual Institute for Artificial Electromagnetic Materials and Metamaterials, Director of the Simons Collaboration on Extreme Wave Phenomena Driven by Symmetries, and Chair of the IEEE Joint New York Chapter. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Optical Materials Express.
